    I am looking at buying a 2005 LX470 with 107,000 miles. At the very least would want to change out the wheels/tires. I am curious if one of our videos goes into your tire set up, or can you share what I should take into consideration with the existing set up and how to go about modifying to more of an offroad spec.

    Now that you have gasoline strapped to the outside of your vehicle you should use your tire table and cook stove on the other side of the vehicle so in the case of fumes escaping you won't have it explode in your face while you are cooking. As a former EMT you might want to re consider mounting 4 gallons of gas to the side of your vehicle. In the event of an accident it is a huge fire hazard to everyone involved in the accident.

    • @WheretoNextOverland
      @WheretoNextOverland 9 годин тому

      These are all very good points and I appreciate your feedback! I DEFINITELY would never cook anything underneath where that fuel tank is. That would be a terrible idea for sure. Regarding the gas being mounted to the truck, I will say that I don't leave it mounted there when it's not needed (which means that 90% of the time, it's not mounted). When it IS mounted, I often have it empty until we begin a stretch where extra fuel may be necessary. It's not perfect, but the risks are mitigated as much as possible by doing all of the above.

      @@WheretoNextOverland I really like your LX470 set up! it's awesome. My views are definitely influenced by all the stuff I have seen over the years, I didn't mean to sound negative. Unfortunately the first thing I tend to see when I look at something like that is the worst possible outcome which although advantageous at times can be a drag for sure. I just bought a 2001 LX 470 with 252,000 miles on it so have been looking at peoples rigs on youtube for ideas. I was hesitant to buy such a high mileage vehicle but got a great price on it and have had good experiences with high mileage Toyotas so I went for it. Looking forward to camping in it! Even only for touring the bigger the tyres it's always better. In many ways. 35s would be much more comfortable than 33s off the road. It's gonna give you more confidence. It looks nice as well. In my humble opinion there's no reason not to run 35s inch tyre. No offense just sharing my humble opinion from my experience, cheers bro.

    • @WheretoNextOverland
      @WheretoNextOverland 9 годин тому

      I'd love to run 35's .... but I disagree that there's no reason not to run a 35 inch tire. More than anything, it comes down to the specific vehicle. For example, on a 3rd gen Tacoma, there's a fair bit of modification (cutting) that usually needs to be done to accommodate 35's. Along with around a 3'' lift. And then, once you have 35's, you really need to re-gear the truck. So, fitting 35's to a 3rd Gen Tacoma becomes a pretty big production with a pretty big expense. In our case, we also have to factor in the Canopy Camper, which from what I understand will not easily accommodate a 35'' tire on the rear door, where we have our spare mounted. Of course it can be done .... but fitting 35's on a Jeep Wrangler is NOT the same as fitting 35's on a Tacoma. 4th gen Tacoma's look like they'll probably bolt right on though, which is awesome to see Toyota fix that oversight!

    WA is great, loved living there. Still, I am in VA now and it's just as beautiful with an older charm and much more history. Went to Berkley Plantation where the first Thanksgiving toplace and the declaration of independence once rested with one of its signers. There are cannon balls from the American revolution in the walls. The NW cannot compare.

    i bought coverado for my daughter's first car (2016 cruze) two years ago. My reaction to these was at least equal to yours! edit: Within a week of her getting these covers, they completely saved by daughters CLOTH seats from a coca-cola mishap at a wendy's drive through... A year later I was so impressed with these that when i bought a new (used) car for myself ('20 Buick Regal), i bought another set of the exact same seat covers by coverado for myself. Now, a year aftter that (2 years since i bought the first set) i can say these wear like iron and with minimal care (armor all) to me look as good as the day they were new and now that they've worn in a bit are MORE comfortable than ever before! One thing you did not mention that should be brought up, the thick padding on these covers that helps make them so comforatble, also make your seat heater almost useless on short drives. I've never actually timed it, but i would guess it takes at least 10-15 minutes to feel the seat heater through these covers. That's the only negative thing i could possibly say about these covers. Great job on the review, not packed with a bunch of BS like so many other reviewers do. Your efforts are very much appreciated! TU from me!

      @@WheretoNextOverland the color, MTM, KDSS, my Tacoma is black and very porpoisey since the suspension is soft. It dives under sudden breaking and it doesn’t feel as torquey down low. I have to give it more gas coming up the hill to my house, but it’s not as bad as my dad’s DCSB 4x2 4-cylinder. My Tacoma was helpful last Saturday in the fact that the 6’ bed helped my dad’s 5’ carry all kinds of crap left behind when my ex-brother in law moved out of an apartment we own after 8 years of not cleaning it. I hope no cockroaches got into my car from all the crap. My Dad is 81 so I was thinking that I might get his truck (though it would probably go to my second oldest niece) and then I could build it up. Put on a SAS, double Atlases, swap a JDM Toyota diesel from DeiselToyz, portals from 74Weld, Ironman 4x4 suspension, Ford 9” rear axle and some kind of slide-in or canopy camper. @J.Young808 ahh, yeah that all makes sense. I agree that in stock form, SUV's are far more practical / usable for every day stuff. You might consider putting an OTT tune on your Tacoma. It's the first thing I did when we got home and it's honestly the best $500 mod I've done to any vehicle ever. Gives you a bit more low end torque, but the real benefit is it almost completely solved the annoying gear hunting 3rd gens are known for. Makes the throttle response MUCH better to. We LOVE our 100 ... but the Taco is a tool for camping, and the important part is what's in the bed. From a camping standpoint, it's a massive upgrade. No matter how you build a 100 (unless you cut the roof off), you can't get close to this setup

      @JeffCleverley 4 дні тому

      @@Gazziza29 had to check your freedom units, but if the alucab is around 250kg (550 freedom units) then winch and bumper, its is not gonna leave much room after people, food and fuel... Have to question the wisdom on this one if that's the case, unless this has had a gvm upgrade (are those legal in US?) - did read some tacoma are up to 1500lbs?

    • @Gazziza29
      @Gazziza29 4 дні тому

      @@JeffCleverley That's pretty typical of any Tacoma build, not much payload left after mods. ANY Tacoma with a camper on it is probably over GVWR. While there are some Tacoma's with higher payloads those tend to be lower trim models without options, access cab and/or 2WD trucks. You have to pay attention to the door jam sticker to get true payload numbers. I know for this particular Tacoma, Double Cab TRD Off-Road, that the door jam payload sticker will be 900-1000lbs. It's not technically legal here but our rules are not as strict as per se Australia. We won't have to have the trucks weighed to be certified or street legal. In some states to register your truck all you need is to pass emissions testing and they may check and see if your headlights and seatbelts work. The only time you get your truck weighed is if you're in an accident and the lawyers and insurance companies want to find who's at fault. There's no such thing as an GVM upgrade here, legally. From what I understand most GVM upgrade kits are just new shocks, springs, and maybe some brakes. While we can do all those upgrades and technically increase payload, this does not change what the door jam sticker states and will not legally increase payload. We can't get the truck re-registered with a new higher payload sticker like you can in AU.

      @@Gazziza29 cheers, then yeah... Bad move imo, overloading a truck is just asking for trouble, should have gone with a Tundra or something bigger... Hate to be a downer on this, but an Alucab is no joke load wise and moving centre of gravity...

    • @WheretoNextOverland
      @WheretoNextOverland 4 дні тому

      According to the door sticker, GVWR IS 5600lbs. With a curb weight of 4480lbs that puts us at 1120lbs. Alucab as loaded is likely right around 550lbs. With the armor and 2 people I'd suspect we're right around max payload. Good thing my wife and I aren't heavy people!

    Don't mean to be a downer but the 3rd gen tacoma was not great. Its reliable, but that's about it. Bad seating position, noisy unrefined gutless engine, horrible transmission and pointless cramped back seats. I I had one built out, don't miss it. I'd take the LX470 all day long or even a Tundra pro. I have both currently. Definitely don't miss the tacoma. With each rig we learn what we do want and don't want. I've had several. Good luck on your journey. What ever you do though, don't get rid of the lx. You’ll regret it.

      The Tacoma is a tool to facilitate easier, more comfortable long-term travel. What was most important to us was what's in the bed. With that said though, I'm curious if you got your Tacoma tuned? I ask because the FIRST thing I did when we got it home was get the OTT tune done, and it is truthfully the best 500 mod I've ever done to any vehicle. Totally transformed the way the truck drives. No more gear hunting, better torque down low. Front seats? I'm 6'2'' and drove across the country in 3 days in those seats (18 hour days). I didn't find them to be uncomfortable. I was expecting to based on all I had read, but I didn't. The seating position is a bit strange, but then again....I'm the kind of moron who crams himself into an NA Miata just for funsies. Lol. As for the LX --- yeah, DEFINITELY don't want to part ways with it. After 3,000 miles in the Taco driving it home, getting home and jumping back in the LX instantly reminded me how much I LOVE the way it drives.

      @@WheretoNextOverland I get it. I did eventually tune, my Tacoma, I did put larger 33 inch tires on it and I ended up getting it down to 529 gears which made a huge difference. I definitely get your point about the bed and all the goodies in it being workable for you guys. Even with my 2021 tundra pro as much as I love it every time I get into my LX 470 and reminded how much better quality fit and finish how much smoother the drivetrain everything is in the older Lexus and Toyota products

      @troyt5564 oh, there's no doubt. The 100 is built like a tank. It's the type of vehicle where a manufacturer says "let's see what the best we can do is" and that's the result. Does Wall Drug still have free ice? I spent a few days in Wall waiting for a new u-joint to be put in my BMW back in the mid seventies. Towing a small trailer to Oregon from NJ to seek fame and fortune…got to know the badlands real well. 50 years ago and I still remember Wall Drug. I’m sure the LX is better equipped to tow a small trailer, but there is still additional wear and tear that towing anything creates on a drive train. Good luck with your Tacoma rig!

I think they’re the best option for overlanding because you can turn the bed into standing height living space yet it’s still a compact vehicle. The alucab is top tier, just be conscious of your payload. You may want to run the truck over a scale to see how much capacity you have left for gear.
